The inch size measures the whole scissor, not just the blade. Most salon cutting sits at 5.5” or 6.0”.

Common questions

What size cutting scissors should I start with?

5.5" suits most everyday salon cutting. Go to 5.0" or shorter for fringes and close detail, and 6.5" or longer for long sections and scissor-over-comb.

Should I choose a serrated or a smooth edge?

A micro-serrated edge grips the hair as the blades close, which helps with blunt lines. A smooth convex edge is the usual choice if you slide cut.

Offset or straight handle?

On an offset handle the thumb ring sits closer to the pivot, so your thumb rests lower. A straight handle keeps both rings level. Most cutters in this range are offset.

Do left-handers need left-handed scissors?

Yes, if you cut with your left hand. A left-handed pair has its blades the other way round, so they close together under your grip instead of pushing apart.
