Salon scissor care
After every client: brush off the hair, wipe and clean the blades, dry them and store them closed. Oil the pivot only if your maker says to.
Between clients
Brush the hair off the blades and out of the pivot. Clean them with a product your maker and salon allow, then dry them before they go away. Barber scissors get the same routine.
At the end of the day
Oil the pivot and check the tension if your maker says to; some pivots need no oil at all. Put each clean, dry pair away closed in its own slot.
For thinners and texturisers
Brush trapped hair out from between the teeth. Don’t force the blades closed on a snag: stop, clear it, then carry on.
When to book a sharpen
Folding, pushing or a rough close? Clean them and do the tension check, then book a sharpen if it’s still there. A dropped or nicked pair stays out of use until it’s been serviced. Here’s how to fix dragging scissors.
