How scissor size is measured

  • Overall length: the inch size
  • Blade length: pivot to tip

The inch size is the whole scissor. Makers differ on whether a finger rest counts.

The blade is the part that cuts. Two pairs with the same inch size can have different blades.

Two 5.5” pairs can have different blade lengths, as the SA-5.5 and LEFT 5.5 show. The size guide explains how to measure the pair you already own.

Common questions

Is 5.5" a good everyday size?

Yes. It's the size to start with if you're not sure: short enough for detail, long enough for most everyday cutting.

Should I choose 5.5" or 6.0"?

Choose 5.5" for more control around detail, and 6.0" for a little more reach across sections and layers.

Is everything here a single cutter?

No. This page also shows thinners and sets with a 5.5" option. The option name on the product page tells you which tool is 5.5".
