Joewell: The Brand and Where to Start

Joewell is the scissor brand of Tokosha in Tokyo. Start with the Classic for an all-rounder, the Classic PRO for detail or the FX for an offset grip.

Tokosha was founded in 1917, and the Classic has been Joewell’s standard model since 1975.

Classic or Classic PRO?

Both have Joewell’s traditional handle. The Classic has the flat single-bevel standard blade; the Classic PRO has a thinner, narrower blade for detail.

Joewell makes this blade thin and narrow for detailed work.

Keep in mind: Sizes stop at 6.0”, so it isn’t an over-comb pair.

Want an offset handle?

The FX puts Joewell’s standard blade on a 3D offset grip, in 5.5” and 6.0”. The FX PRO adds what Joewell calls a Sword and Flat blade, with a 54 mm blade on the 5.5”.

Left-handers and barbers

Joewell makes three true left-handed cutters:

For over-comb work, the Classic also comes in 6.5” and 7.0”.

Thinners

The E30 and E40 are 5.6” thinners with 30 and 40 teeth on a traditional handle. Pick by the finish you want, not just the count: Joewell says cut ratio depends on tooth number and the shape of the comb blade.
