Scissor Care Basics

After every client: brush off the hair, wipe the blades, clean them with your salon’s approved product, dry them properly and store them closed. Oil the pivot only if your maker says to.

The daily routine

  1. Brush the hair off the blades and out of the pivot.
  2. Wipe both blades with a soft, dry cloth.
  3. Clean with your salon’s approved product, following its label.
  4. Dry the blades, rings and pivot completely.
  5. Oil the pivot if your maker’s care sheet says to.
  6. Store them closed, in their own slot or case.

When cleaning doesn’t fix it

Put the pair aside and use your backup if it still folds, pushes or catches hair after a clean, or if it’s been dropped or has a nick. Don’t take an unfamiliar pivot apart. Book a sharpening or service instead.
