Left-Handed Thinning Scissors: Which One to Buy

By SalonScissors editorial team Updated

Ichiro Rose Lefty thinning scissor with a toothed blade and engraved handles.
The Ichiro Rose Lefty thinner: 6.0”, 30 V-shaped teeth, left-handed.

Left-handed cutter sorted? Your thinner needs to be left-handed too. Here’s which one to buy, from A$109.

How we chose: Picked from the left-handed thinners we sell, using listed teeth, size, handle and price. We haven’t run cutting tests. Prices checked 15 October 2026.

Why does a thinner need to be left-handed?

For the same reason your cutter does. A thinner cuts like any scissor, and its blades cross one way. In your left hand, a right-handed thinner hides the line you’re blending and your squeeze pushes the blades apart.

So check the hand on the thinner itself. A left-handed cutter doesn’t make the thinner beside it left-handed.

Which kind of thinner should you buy first?

TypeWhat it doesPick it for
Blender, around 30 fine teethSoftens lines and takes a little weight at a timeYour first thinner
Texturiser or chunker, fewer wider teethTakes out visible piecesDeliberate, broken texture

Spacing: close or wide

Close-set teeth spread the cut for a soft blend. Wide-set teeth take out separate pieces you can see, which is texture.

Tips: flat or notched

The shape of each tip changes how hair is caught. Joewell’s SNT-40, for one, cuts single hairs at its tooth tips.

All four picks here are blenders. Tooth count is a rough guide, not a removal percentage: Joewell says the cut ratio depends on both the number of teeth and their shape. Work a small section first and comb through before you take more.

Our four left-handed picks

  • Mina Umi, for a budget start. Choose Left. A 6.0” thinner with V-shaped teeth on an offset handle. Keep in mind: the listing doesn’t give a tooth count. Need one for your course? The Mina Jay II thinner lists 30 V-shaped teeth and also comes in Left.
  • Ichiro Rose Lefty, to match the cutter. A left-only 6.0” thinner with 30 V-shaped teeth, styled like the Rose Lefty cutter. Keep in mind: it’s one size, and the Rose Lefty set costs less than buying both one at a time.
  • Kamisori Black Diamond III, for a premium blender. Choose Left / 6.0”. A 6.0” offset thinner with 30 teeth. Keep in mind: it’s a big step up in price from the Rose Lefty.
  • Kamisori Revolver III, for a swivel thumb. Choose Left. A 6.0”, 30-tooth thinner with a double-swivel grip and a fixed finger rest. Keep in mind: a swivel ring moves as you cut, so it feels different from a fixed offset handle.

Already cut with an Ichiro Matte Black or Rose Gold? Both thinners come in Left too.

Common questions

Can I use a right-handed thinner if my cutter is left-handed?

You can, but you’ll fight it the same way you’d fight a right-handed cutter. Buy the thinner in Left as well.

How many teeth should my first thinner have?

Around 30, close together. That’s a blender, the most forgiving kind to learn on. Save chunkers with fewer, wider teeth for when you want visible texture.

Does the thinner need to match my cutter’s size?

No. Most thinners we sell are 6.0”, and the Mina Umi set pairs its 6.0” thinner with cutters from 4.5” to 7.0”. Match the hand, not the length.
