Scissor-Over-Comb Tools: Scissors, Comb or Clippers?

By SalonScissors editorial team Updated

Three long cutting scissors, a Mina Dark Gem, a Yasaka 7.0 inch and a Joewell LSF Lefty, beside six hairdressing combs.
Mina Dark Gem, Yasaka 7.0" and Joewell LSF Lefty, with combs from our 10-piece set. Shown at one length.

Clippers over the comb take bulk off fast. Scissors over the comb blend and taper. Here’s which to use where, and the scissors and comb for the job.

How we chose: Picked from our range on listed size, hand and edge, plus Joewell’s specs. We sell them and haven’t run cutting tests. Prices checked 15 October 2026.

Clippers or scissors over the comb?

Australia’s over-comb unit, SHBHCUT005, trains both. Here’s the tool it names for each part of a tapered cut:

Part of the cutTool the unit names
Bulk off the back and sidesClippers over the comb, or scissors over the comb
Blending lengths togetherScissors or clippers, with the comb at different angles
Taper and neckline lengthScissors over the fine or coarse end of the comb
Faded and blended hairlinesClippers or a razor, worked with the growth
Outline over and behind the earsClippers or scissors
SideburnsClippers

Our take: clippers for speed and an even base, scissors where the cut blends into longer hair and you want a softer finish. You’ll often use both on one short back and sides.

Which scissors suit scissor-over-comb?

A 6.5” or 7.0” with a straight blade. More blade covers more of the comb on each pass:

0306090 mm 5.5” scissor: 54 mm blade 7.0” scissor: 85 mm blade Coarse end Fine end
Blade lengths from Joewell’s specs for its 5.5” FX-PRO 55 and 7.0” LSF-70, to scale with each other. Generic comb.

Joewell lists an 85 mm blade on its 7.0” LSF-70, against 54 mm on its 5.5” FX-PRO 55.

Its blade guide says the straighter the blade, the easier it holds hair without sliding, which is what you want against the comb. Joewell’s own over-comb guide recommends long scissors made for barbers.

Which comb should you use?

A cutting comb with fine and coarse ends does most of the work. SHBHCUT005 has you switch between the two ends to change the taper and set the neckline length. Its barber station also lists a tapering comb and a flat-top comb.

Trying a new pair of scissors? Keep the same comb, so you can tell what the scissors changed.

What about fades and necklines?

The assessment for SHBHCUT005 asks for these necklines across your tapered cuts:

  • Tapered: short, medium and long.
  • Shapes: square, curved, faded and blended.

Clippers or a razor shape a faded or blended hairline. Scissors over the comb set a tapered neckline’s length. Around the ears and the nape, a 5.5” or 6.0” is easier to place than a 7.0”, so keep your shorter pair at the station.

Common questions

Is scissor-over-comb better than clipper-over-comb?

No, they do different jobs. Clippers take bulk down quickly and evenly; scissors blend into longer hair and soften the taper. You’ll often use both on one cut.

What length scissors do I need for scissor-over-comb?

A 6.5” or 7.0”. Joewell lists an 85 mm blade on its 7.0” LSF-70, against 54 mm on its 5.5” FX-PRO 55, so the longer pair covers more of the comb on each pass.

Can I use thinning scissors over the comb?

Only if the maker says so. Joewell recommends two of its own high cut-ratio thinners, the JGT-11G and GXG-14, for trimming over the comb.

Can I use my 5.5” for scissor-over-comb?

You can, but it covers less of the comb on each pass. It’s still the better pair for the ears and the neckline.
