Why buy a true left-handed pair?
A left-handed pair has its blades the other way round. In your left hand they close together under your grip, and you can see the line you’re cutting. A right-handed pair in your left hand pushes the blades apart.
Which is best on a budget?
Three picks come in under A$200:
Our pick: the Umi for a first pair, the Rose Lefty if you want 6.0”.
Which is best for everyday salon work?
The Yasaka LEFT 5.5” is a true left-handed offset pair in the everyday 5.5” size. The Kasho Design Master Offset LEFTY costs a little less and has the series’ ratchet tension screw.
Our pick: the Yasaka LEFT, or the Kasho if you want the ratchet screw.
Same 5.5”, different blade
The inch size measures the whole scissor, not the blade. Yasaka gives its LEFT 5.5 a 58 mm blade , and Joewell gives the FX-L55 54 mm .
Overall length: the inch size Blade length: pivot to tip The inch size is the whole scissor. Makers differ on whether a finger rest counts.
The blade is the part that cuts. Two pairs with the same inch size can have different blades.
Level rings or offset?
Nine of the ten are offset. The Joewell LC LEFTY is the one with a symmetric handle, so both rings sit level. The FX LEFTY uses Joewell’s 3D offset handle.
Our pick: the LC LEFTY if you learned on level rings. Otherwise stay offset.
What should left-handed barbers pick?
The Joewell LSF Lefty 6.5” is the long one: Joewell gives it a 74 mm blade , and there’s a 7.0” with 85 mm. On a budget, the Mina Umi also comes in Left / 7”.
Our pick: the LSF Lefty, or the Umi 7” if the budget is tight. The barber scissors guide covers the rest of the kit.
Common questions Can I use right-handed scissors in my left hand? You can, but the blades push apart under a left-handed grip, so you end up fighting every cut. Buy a true left-handed pair.
Are left-handed scissors more expensive? Not always. The Mina Umi costs the same in either hand.
What if the pair doesn’t suit me? You have 14 days to change your mind, as set out on our returns page . Standard delivery is free on orders over A$89, which covers every pair here.
