The inch size measures the whole scissor. The blade is what reaches into the section:
- Overall length: the inch size
- Blade length: pivot to tip
The inch size is the whole scissor. Makers differ on whether a finger rest counts.
The blade is the part that cuts. Two pairs with the same inch size can have different blades.
Keep in mind: a long blade is a lot of steel around the ears, so if you work over the comb, keep a shorter pair for detail.

What does NSW Health say about cleaning scissors?
NSW Health’s fact sheet for hairdressers and barbers sets out the hygiene basics for salons across the state. For your scissors, it says:
- Clean them between clients, with warm water and detergent, and keep them clean and dry.
- Don’t soak them in disinfectant unless the maker’s instructions say to.
- Anything that touches blood needs a valid sterilisation process before it’s used again.
The same sheet says a new salon must register with its local council before it opens. For the daily steps, follow our cleaning routine, and if hair starts folding or pulling, check for residue and tension before you decide the edge needs a sharpen.

Do I need two pairs?
Only if your work splits between detail and over-comb. One 5.5” or 6.0” cutter covers most salon work.
Can I soak my scissors in disinfectant?
Not unless your maker says so. NSW Health says equipment shouldn’t be soaked in disinfectant unless the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.
Can I return scissors that don’t suit me?
Yes, within 14 days of delivery if they’re unused and in their original packaging. You pay the return postage and a 10% restocking fee applies, as set out on the returns page.
