Choose a Scissor Handle That Fits Your Cutting

The handle decides where your thumb and fingers sit as you open and close. Here’s how the layouts differ, and one pair to try in each.

How do the handle layouts differ?

• Straight, or level rings. Both rings sit the same distance from the pivot. It’s the classic shape, and Joewell recommends symmetric handles for point cutting.
• Offset. The thumb branch is shorter, so the thumb ring sits closer to the pivot than the finger ring. It’s the most common layout in our range.
• Crane. A more angled handle that changes the line from your hand to the blade. Angles vary a lot, so compare the side view. Browse the crane-handle range.
• Swivel. The thumb ring, or both rings, rotate as you change angle. It feels different from a fixed ring, so give yourself time to get used to it. Browse the swivel hair scissors.

How should the rings fit?

Your thumb and ring finger should sit in the rings without wobbling or pinching. Rings too big? Finger inserts take up the slack, but check which ones suit your model.

Finger rests differ too. Joewell lists the FX-L55’s rest as removable and the LSF’s as permanent, so check before you plan to take one off.

Left-handed? Inserts and rests change the fit, not the hand. You still need a true left-handed pair.

Will a different handle feel better?

It changes where your thumb, wrist and elbow sit as you cut. Whether that feels better is personal, so try a layout before you commit if you can.

A handle isn’t a treatment, though. If something hurts on an ongoing basis, see a health professional rather than buying a new pair.

Does the handle change the blade you need?

Common questions

Which handle is best for a first pair?

The one your course uses. Most apprentice pairs, like the Ichiro Ergo, have an offset handle.

Is a swivel handle worth it?

Only if you like how it feels. A swivel ring rotates as you change angle, which is a very different feel from a fixed ring. Try one first if you can.

Can I take the finger rest off?

On some models. Joewell lists the FX-L55’s rest as removable and the LSF’s as permanent. Check your model before you try.

What’s the difference between offset and crane?

Offset shortens the thumb branch. Crane angles the whole handle as well. Some crane pairs are offset too, so compare the side view.
