Cut with your left hand? Buy a true left-handed pair, not a right-handed one you’ve learned to put up with.

Why does a true left-handed pair matter?
Two things change when the blades are reversed:

Jaguar, the German scissor maker, explains it the same way: on a left-handed pair the top blade sits on the left, which gives you a clear view of the cutting line, and the blades close when you press with your thumb and finger.
That’s why turning a right-handed pair over or moving its finger rest doesn’t help. The blades still cross the wrong way for your hand.
How do you spot a true left-handed pair?

Look for Left in the name
Pick an option or model that says Left, like the Mina Umi’s Left / 5.5” or Yasaka’s LEFT series.

Check the blades, not just the rings
On a true lefty the blades are reversed too. Left-friendly rings on right-handed blades still cut like a right-handed pair.

Then choose the handle
Offset, level rings or a 3D handle: pick the grip you’d pick in a right-handed pair.
If a listing doesn’t say which hand the blades are built for, ask us before you order.
Which size and handle should a left-hander pick?
The same as anyone else. Start at 5.5” unless you already know you want shorter or longer. Fewer sizes come in Left, so check the option list before you settle on one.

Two pairs with the same size can still have different blades. Yasaka lists a 58 mm blade on its LEFT 5.5, and Joewell lists 54 mm on its FX-L55.

Straight
Both rings sit level, the classic layout. Thumb and finger rings are the same distance from the pivot.

Offset
The thumb branch is shorter, so the thumb ring sits closer to the pivot. Most cutters we sell are offset.

Crane
A sharper offset. The thumb branch bends, which changes the angle your hand holds the blades at.

- Mina Umi, for a tight budget. Choose Left / 5.5” Cutting Scissor. A flat edge and an offset handle at the lowest price here. Keep in mind: Left only comes in 5.5”, 6.0” and 7.0”.
- Ichiro Rose Lefty, for a matched kit. One 6.0” size with a convex slice edge, and a matching left-handed thinner. Keep in mind: there’s no shorter Rose Lefty. The left-handed kit plan prices the cutter, thinner and set.
- Yasaka LEFT, for an everyday 5.5”. Choose 5.5” Inch Cutting Scissor. Yasaka lists SUS440C steel and a 58 mm blade. Keep in mind: the 5.0” and 6.0” have their own blade lengths, compared in the Yasaka LEFT size guide.
- Joewell LSF Lefty, for barbers. Choose 6.5”. A long blade for full sections and over the comb: Joewell lists 74 mm, convex. Keep in mind: the finger rest is permanent.
Common questions
Can a left-hander use right-handed scissors?
You can, but you’re working against them. The top blade sits over your cutting line and your natural squeeze pushes the blades apart. A true left-handed pair fixes both.
Do I need a left-handed thinner too?
Yes. Thinning scissors are built for one hand as well. The Ichiro Rose Lefty thinner matches the Rose Lefty cutter, and the Mina Umi thinner comes in Left. Our left-handed thinner guide compares four.
Do left-handed scissors cost more?
Not always. The Mina Umi is A$114.95 in either hand, and the Ichiro Matte Black is A$229.95 in either hand.
Can I make a right-handed pair left-handed?
No. Turning it over, swapping the finger rest or adding inserts changes the handle, not which blade sits on top.
