Best Scissors for Fine Hair

Fine hair means each strand is small in diameter. It slips between the blades, folds on a tired edge and shows every chunk a heavy thinner takes out.

Convex grind
The outer face curves down to a very fine edge. The inner face is hollowed, so the blades only touch where they cross.
Bevelled grind
The outer face is ground flat down to the edge. Joewell calls its flat single bevel easy to use.

A convex edge has “a very fine, pointed cutting angle”, in Jaguar’s words, which is what fine strands need to cut cleanly instead of folding. Micro-serration does the opposite job: Jaguar says it holds hair so it “does not slip away”, which helps when a fine, wet perimeter keeps sliding along the blade.
For the fringe pick, the Juntetsu Precision VG10 comes in 5.25” or 5.75”. For slide cutting, Joewell says its curved Bamboo blade suits slide cuts and slicing.
How much should you thin fine hair?
Less than you’d think. Fine hair hides less, so a high cut ratio can leave gaps you can see.
Choose a thinner with a low maker rating:
- Joewell SNT-40: about 5% or less. Joewell says it cuts single hairs at its tooth tips.
- Yasaka YS-30S: 7–10%, from Yasaka’s own figures.
- Ichiro Texture Master W-Style: 10–15%, the lightest of its three options.
- Juntetsu Cobalt texturiser, Finesse: 15%.

Barbers: the same rules hold over the comb. On fine hair, a sharp convex cutter and a light blender leave fewer visible steps than a heavy texturiser.
Is fine hair the same as thin hair?
No. Fine is the thickness of each strand; thin, or low density, is how many strands there are. A client can have fine but dense hair, which still needs weight taken out, or fine and sparse hair, which may need none. Check density on the head at the consultation before you reach for a thinner.
Why does fine hair fold on some scissors?
A dull edge or loose tension pushes fine strands instead of cutting them. Clean the blades and check the tension first; if the pair still folds hair, it needs a sharpen. Yasaka asks owners to resharpen as soon as the cut gets poor, and the dragging scissors guide walks through the checks.

Yes, for blunt lines. The serration grips slippery strands so they don’t slide out. Skip them for slide cutting, where you want the hair to move.
What size scissors suit fine hair?
The same as any cut: 5.5” to 6.0” for most work, and 5.0” to 5.5” for fringes and detail. Fine hair needs a sharp edge more than a particular length.
