Do Your New Scissors Fit? A First-Use Check
By SalonScissors editorial team Updated
A new pair can be the right model and still feel wrong in your hand. Check the fit dry, before it touches a client’s hair, so you can still return it if it isn’t right.
How we chose: The ring and insert advice follows Joewell’s handle page, checked 15 October 2026. We sell the kit shown.
Three checks with the pair in your hand
-
The rings
Your thumb and finger should slip in and out without catching. The rings shouldn’t pinch, rub or slop around.
-
The reach
Hold it beside your current pair. Note where the tips sit, because the listed size includes the handle.
-
Cutter and thinner apart
In a set, check the cutter and the thinner separately. They can have different sizes and handles.
Is it the right hand?
Check the listing, your order and the pair all say the hand you cut with. A right-handed pair in your left hand isn’t a fit problem an insert can fix. If the hand isn’t clear, ask us before you use it. The left-handed guide explains the difference.
How should the rings feel?
Open and close the pair slowly, away from anyone’s hair. Your thumb and ring finger should go in and out easily, and the pair shouldn’t twist or slip as you open it.
The handle layout changes where the rings sit:
-
Straight
Both rings sit level, the classic layout. Thumb and finger rings are the same distance from the pivot.
-
Offset
The thumb branch is shorter, so the thumb ring sits closer to the pivot. Most cutters we sell are offset.
-
Crane
A sharper offset. The thumb branch bends, which changes the angle your hand holds the blades at.
If you learned on an offset handle, a straight pair’s level rings will feel different, and the reverse is true too. That’s a change of grip, not a fault. The handle guide goes into the layouts in more detail.
When does a finger insert help?
When a ring is too big. Joewell offers more than one finger-hole size, and says a finger ring can be attached to make the hole smaller. Our maintenance kit comes with four inserts. Check they fit your rings before you rely on them.
Never bend a handle or file a ring to make it fit.
Does the reach suit your work?
Listed sizes include the handle, so two 5.5” pairs can reach differently. Hold the new pair beside your current one and look at where the tips sit. A fringe cutter and a pair for long sections need different reach, so judge it against the work you bought it for. The size guide shows how scissors are measured.
If it doesn’t fit
Stop before it touches hair. Our change-of-mind returns need the pair unused and undamaged in its original packaging, and a request within 14 days of delivery. You pay the return postage and a 10% restocking fee. Scissors used or tested on hair can’t go back for change of mind.
Something wrong with the pair itself, like grinding or a nick? That’s a fault, not a fit question. Contact us with photos.
Common questions
Can a finger insert fix a loose ring?
Often, yes. Joewell says a finger ring can be attached to make the finger hole smaller. Our maintenance kit has four inserts; check they fit your rings first.
Offset or straight handle: which should I choose?
Usually the one you learned on. On an offset handle the thumb ring sits closer to the pivot; on a straight handle the rings are level. Switching takes some getting used to.
Can I return scissors that don’t fit?
Yes, within 14 days of delivery for change of mind, if they’re unused and complete in the original packaging. You pay the return postage and a 10% restocking fee. See our returns page.
Should I check the thinner too?
Yes, separately. In a set, the thinner can have a different size and handle from the cutter.
