Six swivel and crane handle hair cutters compared: which rings rotate, sizes, hands and who each suits, from a budget Mina to Kamisori double swivels.

By SalonScissors editorial team Updated

Four hair cutting scissors with moving or angled handles: Mina Sakura Double Swivel, Ichiro Kawa Swivel Thumb, Yasaka Dry W and Kamisori Revolver III.
Left to right: Mina Sakura Double Swivel, Ichiro Kawa Swivel Thumb, Yasaka Dry W and Kamisori Revolver III. Catalogue photos; pictured sizes may differ.

A swivel handle has a ring that rotates, and a crane handle is bent further than an offset. Six cutters we sell use one or the other, and left-handers can only choose a swivel or crane from Kamisori.

How we chose: Six cutters from our range, picked on handle type, hand, sizes and price. We sell them and haven’t run cutting tests. Checked 4 November 2026.

Which part of the handle moves?

A swivel is a ring that rotates, so your thumb, or your thumb and finger, can change position as you work. A crane is a sharper offset: the thumb branch bends, which changes the angle your hand holds the blades at. The diagram shows straight, offset and crane, and doesn’t draw a swivel.

  • Straight

Both rings sit level, the classic layout. Thumb and finger rings are the same distance from the pivot.

  • Offset

The thumb branch is shorter, so the thumb ring sits closer to the pivot. Most cutters we sell are offset.

  • Crane

A sharper offset. The thumb branch bends, which changes the angle your hand holds the blades at.

Same blades, same pivot. Only the rings move, and that changes how far your thumb reaches.

The handle changes where your hand sits. It doesn’t change the blade, and a handle isn’t a treatment. Our handle guide draws every layout.

1. Mina Sakura Double Swivel: the way in on a budget

Mina Sakura Double Swivel Hair Cutting Scissors

Best for rotating thumb and finger rings on a convex edge

Choose 5.5” for short sections, 6.0” for general cutting or 6.5” for reach. Both rings rotate, and the listing gives a convex edge and SUS440C steel.

Keep in mind: it’s right-handed only, and it feels different from a fixed offset handle, so give it time before you judge it.

2. Ichiro Kawa Swivel Thumb: only the thumb ring turns

Ichiro Kawa Z-Balance Swivel Thumb Scissors

Best for a rotating thumb ring on a Z-Balance offset

Choose 5.5” for close detail, 6.0” for a mixed day or 6.5” for more reach. The thumb ring rotates as you change cutting angle, on a Z-Balance offset handle with a convex edge and a satin finish.

Keep in mind: right-handed only. It’s the one to try if you often shift hand position through a single cut, and the Mina or the Kamisori pairs are the choice if you want both rings to move.

3. Yasaka Dry W Hennessy: a different ring position

Yasaka Dry W Hennessy Hair Cutting Scissors

Best for Yasaka’s Hennessy handle

Choose 5.5” or 6.0” for your usual section size. It’s listed in our crane-handle range, and the listing records ATS314 cobalt stainless steel and a slice edge.

Keep in mind: the Hennessy handle changes the ring position and feel more than the blade does, so look at the side-view photos before you order. Right-handed only. Yasaka’s Dry Cut is in the same range, but its listing describes an offset grip, so compare the photos of both.

4. Kamisori Black Diamond III: a crane handle in either hand

Kamisori Black Diamond III Haircutting Scissors

Best for a low-set thumb ring and a curved crane handle

Choose 5.0” for close detail, 5.5” for mixed salon work or 6.0” for longer sections, then pick Right or Left in the selector. The listing gives a VG-10 cutting blade with Kamisori’s 3D convex edge.

Keep in mind: the matte-black Frozen finish is a finish, not the steel. It’s the only crane pair here with a Left option.

5. Kamisori Jewel III Double Swivel: the single cutter in its range

Kamisori Jewel III Double Swivel Haircutting Scissors

Best for a double-swivel grip in either hand

Choose 5.0” for detail, 5.5” or 6.0” for reach, in Right or Left. The listing gives a polished 440C blade and a 3D convex edge, and says the double-swivel grip gives the thumb ring room to move as you change cutting angle.

Keep in mind: the fixed-offset Jewel III is a separate listing, so check the page says “Double Swivel” before you add it to the basket.

6. Kamisori Revolver III: the dearest swivel here

Kamisori Revolver III Professional Haircutting Scissors

Best for a double-swivel pair with an ATS314 blade

Choose 5.5” for closer control or 6.5” for longer sections, in Right or Left. Kamisori’s 3D convex edge is on an ATS314 blade.

Keep in mind: there’s no 6.0” option. The matching 30-tooth thinner is a separate listing.

Need a swivel thinner too?

Three swivel thinners and sets are on our site. They’re listed here, not ranked.

Is a swivel or crane handle worth trying?

If your current handle suits you, there’s no need to change. If you want a different hand position, these are the six to compare. Change-of-mind returns need an unused pair, so check the photos, the hand and the size before you order. Browse the swivel hair scissors and offset-handle ranges too.

If something hurts on an ongoing basis, see a health professional rather than buying a new pair.

Common questions

What’s the difference between a swivel thumb and a double swivel?

A swivel thumb rotates the thumb ring only, like the Ichiro Kawa. A double swivel rotates both rings, like the Mina Sakura Double Swivel. Kamisori’s listings call the Jewel III Double Swivel and Revolver III double-swivel grips.

Do swivel scissors come left-handed?

From Kamisori, yes. The Jewel III Double Swivel and the Revolver III each have a Left option in the selector. The Mina Sakura and Ichiro Kawa swivels are right-handed.

Is a crane handle the same as an offset?

No. Both put the thumb ring closer to the pivot, but a crane is bent at a sharper angle, so your hand can sit lower. Some models mix both, so compare the side view.

What if the pair doesn’t suit me?

You have 14 days to change your mind, as set out on our returns page. The pair must be unused and in its original packaging. You pay the return postage, and a 10% restocking fee applies.
