Left-Handed Hair Scissors by Size: One Pick Per Length

Choose left-handed hair scissors by size: one true left-handed cutter for each length from 4.5 to 7.5 inches, with what each size suits and the trade-off.

By SalonScissors editorial team Updated

Four left-handed cutting scissors side by side: Ichiro Rose Lefty, Yasaka Left-Handed, Joewell FX Lefty and Joewell LSF Lefty.
Left to right: Ichiro Rose Lefty, Yasaka Left-Handed, Joewell FX Lefty and Joewell LSF Lefty. Catalogue photos; pictured sizes may differ.

Left-handers often pick the size last, because the choice of true left-handed pairs is smaller. Start with the length instead: 5.5” covers most work, 4.5” to 5.0” suits detail, and 6.5” and up reaches over the comb.

How we chose: One true left-handed cutter for each length, picked on listed sizes and hand. We sell them and haven’t run cutting tests. Checked 4 November 2026.

Which size should a left-hander choose?

The inch size is the whole scissor, not the blade, so use it as a guide and compare blade lengths where a maker gives one. Pick the size for the cut you do most, and add a second length later for the rest.

  • Overall length: the inch size
  • Blade length: pivot to tip

A true left-handed pair has its blades reversed as well as the handle. Turning a right-handed pair over doesn’t create one, as our left-handed guide explains. For a ranking by budget instead, see the top 10 left-handed hair cutting scissors.

Mina Rainbow II Cutting Scissors

Best for the shortest left-handed pair here

Choose the Left 4.5” for fringes and ears. The same listing has left-handed sizes up to 7.0”, so you can add a longer pair later in the same model.

Keep in mind: 4.5” covers less hair per cut. It’s one cutter, in a rainbow finish.

5.0”: Ichiro Matte Black, compact with a convex edge

Ichiro Matte Black Cutting Scissors

Best for a compact left pair with a matte black finish

Choose Left 5.0” for detail and short layers. The listing gives a convex edge and an offset handle, and left-handed sizes run from 5.0” to 6.0”.

Keep in mind: the matte black is a coating, so dry it after use. Pick Left in the selector, because the same page sells right-handed sizes too.

5.2”: Kasho Ivory for close lines

Kasho Ivory Left Handed Offset Hair Cutting Scissors

Best for left-handed detail work around the face

Choose it for close lines, point work and detail. The listing gives a left-handed 5.2” with an offset handle and a convex slice blade.

Keep in mind: one length only, so keep a longer pair for broad sections and over-comb cutting.

5.5”: Mina Umi, the everyday length on a budget

Best for a left-handed 5.5” with an offset handle

Choose Left 5.5” as a main pair. The listing describes a flat cutting edge and an offset handle. There are left-handed 5.5”, 6.0” and 7.0” options, but no shorter left Umi.

Keep in mind: pick Left and the size together in the selector. For a pair with a documented blade length at 5.5”, see the Yasaka LEFT and its option guide.

6.0”: Ichiro Rose Lefty for more reach

Ichiro Rose Lefty Hair Cutting Scissors

Best for a dedicated left-handed 6.0”

Choose it when 5.5” feels short for your sections. It’s a 6.0” left-handed cutter with a convex slice edge and an offset grip.

Keep in mind: one size and one hand. The matching Rose Lefty thinner is sold separately, or as a set.

6.5”: Joewell LSF Lefty for over-comb work

Joewell LSF Lefty Scissors

Best for a long left-handed blade for full sections

Choose 6.5” for a balance of reach and control, or the 7.0” option on the same page for wider strokes. Both are built for the left hand, with an offset handle and satin finish.

Keep in mind: it’s a long blade, so keep a shorter pair for the ears and nape. Our scissor-over-comb guide matches blade to comb.

7.0”: Ichiro Pink Moon, a long pair on a mid budget

Best for a Left 7.0” with a convex blade and offset handle

Choose Left 7.0” for broad sections and over-comb work. The listing gives a convex blade and an offset handle, with left-handed sizes from 5.0” to 7.0”.

Keep in mind: confirm both hand and size in the selected option before you order. It’s one cutter, and the matching thinner is separate.

7.5”: Kamisori Sword, the longest left-handed blade here

Kamisori Sword Professional Haircutting Scissors

Best for a long-blade left-handed cutter up to 7.5”

Choose 7.5” for the longest strokes, or step down to 6.0”, 6.5” or 7.0” on the same page. The listing gives an ATS314 blade with Kamisori’s 3D convex edge and a fixed offset handle.

Keep in mind: pick Left in the selector. The matching Sword thinner is a separate 6.5” tool.

What if there’s no left-handed size you want?

Some lengths have one choice. If your size isn’t here, ask us before you buy a right-handed pair, because a right-handed pair stays right-handed in your left hand. Our left-handed kit plan shows how to build a kit around the sizes that exist, and our left-handed thinning plan covers thinners.

Common questions

What size of scissors should a left-hander start with?

5.5” if you’re not sure. It’s an easy length to place and covers most sections. Go shorter for detail and longer for over-comb.

Are left-handed scissors more expensive?

It depends on the model. Some listings sell the left-handed size at the same price as the right-handed one, so check the product page for your size.

Can I just use right-handed scissors?

You can hold them, but the blades are right-handed. A true left-handed pair reverses the blades as well as the handle, which changes what you can see as you cut.

What if the pair doesn’t suit me?

You have 14 days to change your mind, as set out on our returns page. The pair must be unused and in its original packaging, so check the hand and size before you order.
