Top 10 Straight Handle Hair Scissors: Level-Ring Cutters
Ten straight handle hair cutters with level rings, from a budget Mina to Joewell Classic: sizes, hand, edge and one trade-off for each, cheapest first.
By SalonScissors editorial team Updated
A straight handle puts the thumb ring and the finger ring level with each other, the classic layout. Ten cutters we sell have one, and the choice comes down to size, edge and whether the listing states a hand.
How we chose: Ten straight handle cutters from our range, picked on listed handle, hand, size and price. We sell them and haven’t run cutting tests. Checked 4 November 2026.
More on how we chose
What is a straight handle, and who is it for?
On a straight handle, both rings sit level, so the thumb and finger are the same distance from the pivot. An offset handle shortens the thumb side, and a crane bends it further. Straight suits someone who learned on a traditional grip, or who wants to hold the scissors upright. Joewell recommends symmetric handles for point cutting for that reason, and our point cutting tips cover the technique.
-
Straight
Both rings sit level, the classic layout. Thumb and finger rings are the same distance from the pivot.
-
Offset
The thumb branch is shorter, so the thumb ring sits closer to the pivot. Most cutters we sell are offset.
-
Crane
A sharper offset. The thumb branch bends, which changes the angle your hand holds the blades at.
No layout is better for every hand. Most cutters we sell are offset, so if you’ve never used a straight handle, give it time. Our handle guide compares all three.

1. Mina Classic, pastel pink: level rings, lowest price
Mina Classic Pastel Pink Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for a level-ring handle on SUS440C steel
Choose 5.0” around fringes and ears, 5.5” as an everyday length or 6.0” for longer sections. Each option is one right-handed cutter with a classic level-ring handle.
Keep in mind: the pastel pink is a coating over the steel, so wipe it dry and give it its own pocket. A matching thinner is in the Pastel Pink set.
2. Juntetsu Classic II: convex slice in compact lengths
Juntetsu Classic II Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for symmetrical rings and a convex slice edge
Choose 5.25” when tip placement matters most or 5.75” for a little more reach. The rings sit opposite each other, and the listing gives a convex slice edge for clean shape work.
Keep in mind: right-handed only, and it stops at 5.75”. It’s one cutter, so add a thinner separately if blending is part of your day.
3. Juntetsu Master Tech Black Classic: VG-10 in a dark finish
Juntetsu Master Tech Black Classic Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for classic opposing rings, VG10 steel and a convex edge
Choose 5.0” for tight placement, 5.5” as a middle length or 6.0” for reach. The listing gives VG10 steel, a convex edge, a bearing pivot and a tungsten-carbide inlay.
Keep in mind: the black is a coating, so dry the blade after use. It’s right-handed only.
4. Kasho Design Master Straight: a semi-convex slice blade
Kasho Design Master Straight Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for a classic handle with a semi-convex slice blade
Choose 5.0” for detail, 5.5” for a compact main pair or 6.0” for more reach. Both rings are in line, and the listing describes a slice blade for drawn strokes and clean graduation.
Keep in mind: right-handed only. Choose the Design Master Offset instead if you want the thumb ring lower.
5. Joewell New Era: short and in line
Joewell New Era Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for close salon detail with a removable finger rest
Choose 5.0” or 5.5”, which are easy to position around the face. The thumb and finger rings are in line, and a removable finger rest lets you adjust the grip.
Keep in mind: the listing doesn’t state a hand, so ask us before you order. It stops at 5.5”, so add a longer pair for over-comb reach.
6. Yasaka SA Classic: a documented blade length
Yasaka SA Classic Precision Scissors
Best for level rings in SUS440C steel
Choose 5.5” for closer placement or 6.0” for more reach. Yasaka’s SA-5.5 page lists a 60 mm blade for the 5.5”, and the inch size measures the whole scissor, not the blade.
Keep in mind: level rings feel different if you learned on an offset pair, and the SA is right-handed only.
7. Yasaka L-65: more blade, same level rings
Yasaka L-65 Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for level rings with a longer cutting blade
Choose it if you like level rings but want more blade for lines and larger sections. The record lists ATS314 cobalt stainless steel and a slice edge.
Keep in mind: check the stated length in the product details before you order. It’s right-handed only and one size, so keep a shorter pair for detail.
8. Kasho Blue Straight: four sizes with a convex slice
Kasho Blue Straight Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for classic straight rings in 4.5” to 6.0”
Choose 4.5” or 5.0” for precise placement, 5.5” for a flexible salon length or 6.0” for more reach. The listing says its convex slice blade suits graduation, close detail and drawn finishing strokes.
Keep in mind: right-handed only. Compare the Blue Offset if you want a lower thumb position.
9. Joewell Classic PRO: for fine, close work
Joewell Classic PRO Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for detail on a traditional handle
Choose 4.5” or 5.0” for close placement, 5.5” or 6.0” for reach through sections. Joewell names a convex blade and describes it as thin and narrow for detailed work.
Keep in mind: the listing doesn’t say which hand. Ask us before you order.
10. Joewell Classic: the widest range of lengths
Joewell Classic Hair Cutting Scissors
Best for level rings from 4.5” to 7.0”
Choose a shorter length for detail, 5.5” to 6.0” for everyday sections or 6.5” to 7.0” for reach. Joewell’s blade guide identifies the standard Joewell blade as a flat single bevel.
Keep in mind: the hand isn’t listed, so ask us before you order. The model specs on Joewell’s page apply to the 5.5” option, not every size.

Common questions
Is a straight handle the same as a symmetric handle?
They describe the same layout: both rings level. Listings also say classic, traditional, symmetrical or opposing rings.
Are straight handles better for point cutting?
Joewell recommends symmetric handles for it because you hold the scissors upright. Offset pairs point cut too, so use the layout you place best.
Do straight handles come left-handed?
Not in this list. Joewell’s LC LEFTY has level rings in a left-handed build, and our left-handed guide covers it.
What if the pair doesn’t suit me?
You have 14 days to change your mind, as set out on our returns page. The pair must be unused and in its original packaging. You pay the return postage, and a 10% restocking fee applies.
