Top 10 Questions Salon Owners Ask About Team Scissors
Ten questions salon owners ask when buying for a team: who owns the tools, how many spares, who pays for service, left-handed staff and team quotes.
By SalonScissors editorial team Updated
These are the questions that come up when you’re responsible for a whole team’s scissors, not just your own. Short answers are here, and each one points to the guide that goes deeper.
How we chose: Ten questions in the order owners meet them, answered from our team-buying, backup and care guides. We sell scissors and haven’t run cutting tests. Reviewed 5 November 2026.

1. Should every stylist use the same scissors?
Not usually. Scissors fit a hand, so one model for everyone tends to suit some people and trouble others. Standardise the things that make the day easier, such as care supplies, spares and service, and leave handle layout, ring fit and size to each stylist.
A matching kit does make sense for a training bench, where every learner holds the same pair. Our guide to buying for a salon team sets out what to standardise.
2. Who should own the tools?
Decide this before you buy anything, because it changes the rest. Some salons supply tools, some expect stylists to bring their own, and some do both.
A mixed arrangement works if it’s written down. Salon-owned pairs are yours to care for, service and replace, so label each one. Stylist-owned pairs stay with the stylist, though you can still set a care standard.
3. How many spares do we need?
Enough that a stylist can keep working while their main pair is away. One spare covers one booking, but not two stylists on the same day. Remember hand and size too, because a right-handed spare doesn’t help a left-handed stylist.
Our backup scissors guide goes through the planning, with budget picks for salon and barber backups.
4. Who pays for sharpening and service?
That’s a salon decision, and the best answer is a written one. Many salons set one rule for salon-owned tools and another for stylist-owned tools. Agree it before a pair needs a service, not after.
Before you send anything away, our guide on what to ask a sharpener lists the questions about turnaround and what’s included.
5. How often should we replace scissors?
There’s no fixed schedule. Replace a pair when it no longer fits the stylist, has damage that service can’t fix, or costs more to keep going than a new pair would. A log of each pair’s condition makes that call easier.
Our maintenance log guide shows a simple format for it.
6. How do we find out what we already own?
Run an audit. List every pair, who uses it and what condition it’s in, then mark the gaps. First priorities are usually a stylist with no spare, a pair that needs service and a missing left-handed pair.
Our salon tool audit gives you a checklist, and it’s worth doing before any order.
7. What about left-handed staff and apprentices?
Include them from the first audit. A true left-handed pair has the blades reversed as well as the handle, so a right-handed pair turned over isn’t a substitute.
Ask your supplier whether a model comes in the same range for both hands, because a team kit is easier when everyone can pick from one range. Our left-handed kit plan shows what a left-handed stylist needs first.
8. What should we ask a supplier?
Ask five things: whether left-handed pairs are in the same range, how returns work for a pair that doesn’t fit, whether a volume quote is available, what service involves and how long you’re without a pair, and who the seller is.
Our authenticity checklist covers the last one, and the premium purchase checklist helps before a larger spend.
9. How do we set up a new stylist’s tools?
Give each new starter the same short induction. Ask their cutting hand and the sizes they use, add them to your scissor log and agree where their pair is stored. Show them the care routine at the station and how to report a nick or a drop.
If you supply the pair, check it on the day you hand it over with our first-use fit check.
10. Can we get a quote for a team order?
Yes. Send the models, sizes and quantities you’re planning through our wholesale page, and ask for a quote before you order. A clear list helps, so group it by stylist, hand and size.
For a class or an apprentice intake, the apprentice and TAFE kit guide shows what a first kit contains.

Common questions
What’s the first thing a salon owner should do?
Audit what you already have. List each pair, who uses it and its condition, then fill gaps before you add anything.
Should apprentices get a matching kit?
It can help, because everyone on the bench holds the same pair and a teacher can show one set of adjustments. Check your course’s kit list first.
Where do care supplies fit?
At every station. A cloth, a brush and oil as your makers advise keep the pairs you own working longer. See our care hub.
Next step
Start with the audit, then use the scissor finder to fill the gaps. A care kit at every station is a low-cost first step.
